Meet Victor
One of the hardest losses an individual with physical challenges experiences is its exclusion. For years, Victor watched life happen around him. He doesn’t have a family. He listened as others in the orphanage talked about school and movies. He waited as support staff came and went. He spent long hours uncomfortable and unsupported, often lying in bed because there was no safe, reliable way to move him. And no-one seemed to pay any attention to him.
Carlos had met Victor when he had worked at the facility where Victor lived. Carlos had left that job, but went back to check on Victor to realize no-one was paying much attention to Victor’s situation. So, as Victor’s friend, he stepped up to help.
“He’s always crooked and uncomfortable,” he shared. “He’s heavy, and it’s hard to move him.”
Carlos had been able to get hold of a very old and very used wheelchair. Every outing required careful planning—or simply didn’t happen at all. Everyday moments most of us take for granted just never happened.
Then Carlos brought Victor to the distribution hoping to acquire a ROC Wheels wheelchair. Victor is not a child, he’s 21 years old and Carlos did not know where else to turn.
As he was fitted into his new chair, his posture changed. His body was supported. For the first time in a long while, he was sitting comfortably—secure, upright, and at ease. But that was all exceeded by the joyful expression on his face.
