Freedom of movement is invisible—until it’s gone.

We walk without thinking. Run without planning. Move through our days with a kind of mobility so natural we forget it’s a gift. Our legs carry us to work, to loved ones, to wherever the day demands. We take it for granted because we’ve never had to do otherwise.

But for millions of children with disabilities around the world, life looks very different. They wait.

They wait on the ground; on mats, blankets, or bare earth.
They wait inside small homes, unable to go outside on their own.
They wait while siblings leave for school and play.
They wait while parents carry them, again and again, until their own bodies can no longer bear the weight.

It’s About Access

This is not because these children are unloved. It is because mobility is unavailable.

Without a wheelchair designed for rugged terrain and growing bodies, children lose access to education, healthcare, and community life. Parents often must stay home to care for their child, which limits their income, opportunities, and connection. Some mothers have to live in different cities from their children to earn money for therapies, while the child lives with relatives.

Over time, something deeper happens. Hope fades.

The True Cost of Waiting
